Historical Namesake:
As a State Legislator Peter Norbeck recognized the need for development in the Black Hills. His first goal was to create a game preserve in order to re-stock the wildlife that should have been there. After getting that passed in 1912, he went on to spear-head the construction of the Needles Highway and the Iron Mountain Road (both are part of the Norbeck Scenic Byway). He is recognized as a man of vision at a time in history that it was so important to preserve the natural beauty of the area.

Comfortable and relaxing. Left a personal item when we departed, Marilyn contacted us before we realized we had left it. Shipping to us without our ever requesting it, great service!
Marilyn was a great host who made us feel at home with coffee, cookies, and conversation before bed. She was very knowledgeable about the local area and shared a map with points of interest and directions for getting to them. Lodge was beautiful and well maintained. Fun to see Mt Rushmore lit up in the distance from the deck after dark!
We felt right at home and Marilyn is a wonderful host. She is an amazing resource of knowledge and has the most fascinating stories to share. She gave us an Agenda with map that allowed us to see all the sights we needed to in the one day we were there . I highly recommend!
I'll not repeat all the accolades from other reviews, but they are spot on. With Buffalo Rock Lodge you get so much more than just lodging and breakfast (which was incredible!). It is an experience in itself because of Marilyn Oakes. First of all, she is the granddaughter of C.C. Gideon (google him!) and has a deep, rich knowledge of everything South Dakota. Her stories are like living with the park ranger. Every morning when you sit down to her wonderful gourmet breakfast, you can pick her brain about everything you saw yesterday and what is ahead of you that day. Afterward, you "meet" at what she jokingly refers to the Command Table where she will give you her special directions (printed out, with a nice map, I might add) for a beautifully planned day, making sure you do the most scenic roads in the right direction at the perfect time of day. And, off you go! At night on the deck, looking up at Mt. Rushmore, you can share your experiences and get all sorts of insights from her vast "insider" experience. Your time in South Dakota will be so much richer than you could ever get anywhere else. We fell in love with South Dakota and Marilyn Oakes!
When making arrangements to visit the Black hills, I had made arrangements to stay somewhere else and then I cancelled those plans when I came across Buffalo Rock lodge. I am so glad I did - This place was wonderful!! Marilyn made you feel comfortable and was so friendly!! The breakfasts were wonderful also. We were given tips of things to see and places to eat. The other guests were friendly and had advice also. I would definitely stay here again if we ever venture back tot he black hills!!
